Arithmetic and algebraic expressions are the same except algebra uses variables. The biggest differences between Pre-Algebra and Algebra are the pace and the length. Prealgebra introduces algebra concepts and takes each one slower and therefore does not cover as much material as standard algebra.
The objective of it is to prepare students for the study of algebra.
Topics covered in this blog include the properties of arithmetic, exponents, primes and divisors, fractions, equations and inequalities, decimals, ratios and proportions, unit conversions and rates, percent’s, square roots, basic geometry (angles, perimeter, area, triangles, and quadrilaterals), statistics, counting and probability, and more!
Identifying Prime and Composite numbers
A prime number is the number which only has two factors. A composite number has more than two factors. 1 is neither prime nor composite. In other words, a prime number is a whole number that only has two factors which are itself and one. A composite number has factors in addition to one and itself.
For example, let’s take number 7. It has only two factors. 1&7. Or the number 7 is not evenly divided. Now consider the number 6. It can be divided by 2 &3 other than 1&6. Or it can be evenly divided in to 3 groups with 2 in each or 2 groups with 3 in each group.
In other words,
When a number can be divided up evenly it is a Composite Number
When a number cannot be divided up evenly it is a Prime number.
Some facts:
- The only even prime number is 2. All other even numbers can be divided by 2.
- If the sum of a number’s digits is a multiple of 3, that number can be divided by 3.
- No prime number greater than 5 ends in a 5. Any number greater than 5 that ends in a 5 can be divided by 5.
- Zero and 1 are not considered prime numbers.
- Except for 0 and 1, a number is either a prime number or a composite number. A composite number is defined as any number, greater than 1, that is not prime.
